Chemical analysis of lava provides important information about activity deep inside a volcano's magma chambers.

Is there a risk of inhaling sulphur derived chemicals (H2S / S02 / xS03 / xS04) and if so would a gas mask help?

I used to want to do that when I was a child; so much so I got in trouble for *always* drawing pictures of volcanoes. Pity we have to grow up.

I’d have asked for a longer handle on that tool

Wow! And it looks like they are downwind. Not sure that piece of cloth over the face is enough!

This looks absurdly terrifying. The way the lava slowly moves towards their "safety sneakers", or the way that if they slip sideways on those incredibly smooth rocks they'll roast like a charcoal brick before anyone can get to them.

Any geologists here? Does the interaction of the lava with the water in the bucket have any chemical consequences? Does the chemical analysis have to account for this? Or do you just discard the exterior skin of the sample before analysis?

Do they make the bucket with three iron ingots? Because...

And isn't this going to make obsidian?

Is the nether... real?
