O projeto "Universidade Gratuita", em SC, é um engodo para injetar recursos públicos na rede privada por meio da concessão de bolsas. A universidade gratuita já existe há décadas no estado por meio de UFSC, UDESC, IFSC e IFC.
Um jornalista neoliberal no twitter defende esse projeto afirmando que nas universidades conveniadas não existe greve (ironizando a greve dos TAEs). Recebe em resposta um fato: UFSC é a 4ª melhor universidade federal do país, nenhuma privada de SC figura nesse ranking.
Voltando a esse assunto: a audácia desse conglomerado por instalar em vários pontos de Floripa outdoors enormes dizendo o seguinte: "Universidade Gratuita em Floripa é só uma: <UniPrivada>".
A dissociação da realidade é assustadora porque ignora as instituições que há décadas são universidades verdadeiramente gratuitas na cidade: UFSC, UDESC e IFSC.

American admiral and computer scientist, (designed COBOL) Grace Hopper was born #OTD in 1906.
She created the first compiler, the A-0 System, in 1952. She was also one of the first programmers on the Harvard Mark I computer. Hopper popularized the term "debugging" in computing after discovering an actual moth causing a malfunction in the Mark II computer.
My favorite and most useful anecdote regarding admiral hopper, is that she would carry an 11-in piece of steel wire in her coat pocket when she knew she'd be meeting others for technical briefing. And one instance some high ranking feller was complaining about how long it took to send a message by satellite, "why can't we do it immediately?"
Admiral Hopper would pull out that 11-in piece of steel wire, hold it up, and say "this is a nanosecond." Brilliant.

I learned about her when I was in high school in the late 1970s. My father was in the Navy. He was an electrical engineer but was interested in computers (self taught) so he's the one who told me about her.
I ended up getting a computer science degree and worked as a software engineer for years 🤓
I had an interview with a curator at the world's largest computer museum, the Heinz Nixdorf Museums Forum (HNF) in Paderborn (Germany), to talk about the milestones of computer development. And the anecdote with Grace Hopper and a log entry that a bug had squashed itself into a relais and thus became part of the language used in code analysis was a funny contribution. Thank you for your guide and your work! I'll keep it in mind if/when I'll have to switch distro (I'm on Linux Mint/Cinnamon at the moment). I've seen promising things on the next versions of KDE Plasma and I think it might be time to switch distribution.

Thank you! For my monitors, they are two Philips 245E (24 inch, quad HD), I love their frameless design and the contrast of the IPS. Their colorspace is pretty limited (almost a sRGB), but it's true they are very robust. They are from 2019 I think, and before that, I had two Philips too, same design, but 21inch and 1080p. I changed them for a resolution upgrade (they were still working) That's probably why it looks like on photos more than 10 years ago I still had the same screens. ☺️
@Brian_Innes hey, not immediately. In terms of OS and DE , I'm fine with 12 and all my apps upgrade when I want because of Flatpak or appimages. There is really low benefits to me to upgrade, except loosing hours to fix something that is already working 😉 But I'll probably do it to update my guide later this autumn.

A mais empolgada foi de um servidor justamente do Judiciário. O cara não conseguia passar meia hora sem falar das imensas vantagens de colocar tudo na nuvem. Pelo que pude inferir, é um cara com algum cargo de gestão e estava mais do que satisfeito com o governo sendo mero consumidor de produtos de software.

Pro #quartacapa de livros que marcaram a minha infância, eu poderia citar vários da coleção Vaga-lume (e deles, eu me lembro que o primeiro que eu li foi "O Cachorrinho Samba"), que era um padrão adotado na escola estadual onde eu estudava.
Mas um livro que me deixou muito impressionado foi "Alice no País das Maravilhas" de Lewis Carroll. Eu estava na terceira ou quarta série (hoje quarto ou quinto ano) e a biblioteca da minha escola (pública, estadual) era relativamente bem servida de livros, mesmo sendo pequena. Eu estava de férias e fui até lá, pedindo uma indicação. A bibliotecária me passou esse e eu o devorei (detalhe, tinha que ler na biblioteca, não podia emprestar). Fiquei fascinado com a história.
@A bruxa quase boa do Agreste com certeza! Se tivéssemos um programa de bibliotecas de escolas abertas ao público, com pessoal bem treinado no atendimento, talvez isso ajudasse a difundir mais a leitura, em tempos de telas e apps...

@DaisyLee @petejones this may be a loaded question, but when will we see KDE on mobile? I dream of the day when, whatever device I pick, even if it is someone else's or a loaner from the hotel, I sign in and all my stuff is there, familiar and ready to use.
Web-based is almost there, but I'd rather it worked like KDE 😼

Illustrative. Apparently zero malice whatsoever in the bridgyfed suspension. But malice isn't what's important here. The single company that operates bluesky couldn't handle the demand bridgyfed placed on their central service, so bridgyfed had to get turned off for a bit (and not by bridgyfed's choice). Reasonable for a centralized service making a best effort to meet customer needs. But intuitively, if you have a federated/decentralized service, this sort of thing isn't even *possible*
this isn't a defense of anyone or anything, but my understanding was that Bluesky's relay couldn't handle their own PDS load and shut off importing other PDSs while working on stabilizing their system by spinning up a larger relay and staggering traffic onto it. I don't think they were just like "oh shit turn off Bridgy Fed!"
it does not seem like all the facts are in just yet but that does not seem consistent with the folks claiming that their self-hosted PDSes are still getting imported in the github issue comments
Whether by accident or design, what it shows is that they can drop the self-hosted PDSes whenever they feel like it (think of eg Facebook and Google supporting XMPP and then dropping it)
